Fear in Ankawa - Le Monde diplomatique

  • Fear in Ankawa, by Benjamin Hiller

A mainly Christian district in the Iraqi city of Erbil — Ankawa — was bombed on April 17. Two civilians were killed, the coffee bar Nelly’s destroyed, and the whole area affected. Since then, once crowded Isthar Street seems eerily calm and all the entrances to the area are blocked off for traffic by concrete barriers. At the Zanobia tobacco store friends help Peter Naoum prepare to close down. “No customers are coming here anymore,” he calmly explains. “Sometimes they call me and ask for two large boxes of cigars but afterwards they do not return at all. They are afraid to come back here.” [#st]
