#Twitter is Considering Tipping via Tweet, New Identifiers for #Trolls
    ▻https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/twitter-is-considering-tipping-via-tweet-new-identifiers-for-trolls-and-mo/570337

After years of criticism for its perceived failure to evolve its platform, and take action on key elements fast enough, Twitter says that it’s now "picking up the pace” of innovation, and looking to implement more changes and options to help improve the overall Twitter experience.

We’ve already seen some of these in its updates to lists and the addition of topics to follow, and there are more on the way, with controls over who can reply to your tweets and it’s long-awaited ’conversational’ features. But these are just some of the elements that Twitter’s working on - according to new reports, Twitter is also looking into a new tipping option for tweets, improved identification of trolls, tweaks for lists, and more.

Here’s an overview of some of the additional Twitter updates we may see in the near future.

    1. Tipping in Tweets

With Facebook moving further into on-platform payments, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s enthusiasm for cryptocurrency, it may come as little surprise that Twitter too is looking at its own payment option, with tipping via tweet.

    As reported by The Information:

“Twitter is considering a feature that will allow users to tip - sending each other money from their tweets - according to two people familiar with the company’s decisions. [...] Twitter and Square already partner to let users make donations to politicians through tweets, according to company filings.”

There’s a lot to consider here - the capacity to exchange money via tweet could have significant implications for the service, and may provide a whole new revenue stream to popular tweet creators.

Or not. The key strength of Twitter is the capacity to be able to contribute to public discourse, to have your say on any given topic and add that into the wider Twitter stream. If you were able to charge people to see your tweets - which is not currently the proposal, but maybe an extension of the same - that would also, theoretically, reduce your exposure, which may negate its value anyway.

But still, no doubt those who share scoops and exclusive insights on Twitter will be doing the math in their heads, calculating what, exactly, their tweets are worth. The truth is, probably not much - but maybe, if they could call for contributions from their loyal fans, it could provide another incremental income stream, if the option were to go that route.

More likely the option would be a boon for those sharing adult content on the platform - but still, the capacity to raise funds via tweet would open up a range of possibilities. And worth noting, YouTube recently reported that more than 100,000 of its channels are now earning money via its live-stream tipping option, called ’Super Chat’, with some streams generating more than $400 per minute “as fans reach out to creators to say hello, send congratulations, or just to connect”.

The use case is obviously different, but it may provide some pointers as to where Twitter is looking on this front.

It’s also worth noting that various Twitter employees have said that, while this has been discussed, such a project is not actively in development at this stage.

It began subtly. Coworkers peppered mailing lists and company town halls with questions: What about meritocracy? Isn’t improving diversity lowering the bar? What about viewpoint diversity? Doesn’t this exclude white men?
(…) That’s when it clicked: perhaps some of her coworkers’ questions had not been in good faith. “We didn’t realize that there was a dirty war going on, and weren’t aware of the tactics being used against us,”

Handful of “highly toxic” Wikipedia editors cause 9% of abuse on the site, by Annalee Newitz | Ars Technica

    https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/1-GT46vE6ip8lwjMFJMf_Bvw-760x380.jpeg

“Perhaps surprisingly, approximately 30% of attacks come from registered users with over a 100 contributions.” In other words, a third of all personal attacks come from regular Wikipedia editors who contribute several edits per month. Personal attacks seem to be baked into Wikipedia culture.

The researchers also found that a large percentage of attacks come from a very small number of “highly toxic” Wikipedia contributors. Eighty percent of personal attacks on Wikipedia come from people who rarely make personal attacks. But a whopping 9% of attacks in 2015 came from 34 users who had made 20 or more personal attacks during the year. “Significant progress could be made by moderating a relatively small number of frequent attackers,” the researchers note. This finding bolsters the idea that problems in online communities often come from a small minority of highly vocal users.

Twitter will start hiding inappropriate responses to tweets so they don’t appear in user conversations. Tweets containing words, phrases or images deemed inappropriate by the company will be hidden from conversation threads, and users will need to click a new “show less relevant replies” button in order to see them. Twitter will use machine learning technology (a.k.a. algorithms) to automatically hide certain responses. You can’t opt out of this feature, according to a company spokesperson.

[Emily Temple-Wood started] the Women Scientists WikiProject, to improve the quality and coverage of biographies of notable achievers in this field. “Unfortunately, part of Wikipedia’s systemic bias is that women in science are woefully underrepresented. Let’s change that!” reads a note at the top of the project page. The community now includes 90 editors.

She’s not the only person leading an effort to increase diversity on Wikipedia — public gatherings to promote inspirational women, African American artists and LGBT-related content, known as edit-a-thons, pop up sporadically. But Aaron Halfaker, a principal research scientist at Wikimedia Foundation, noticed that starting in mid-2013 — about six months after Temple-Wood kicked off the WikiProject—articles about women scientists began to grow much faster than the rest of Wikipedia.

How the Chinese Government Fabricates Social Media Posts for Strategic Distraction, not Engaged Argument | Gary King
    ▻http://gking.harvard.edu/50c
    http://gking.harvard.edu/files/gking/files/screen_shot_2016-05-18_at_12.11.46_pm.png?m=1463587964

The Chinese government has long been suspected of hiring as many as 2,000,000 people to surreptitiously insert huge numbers of pseudonymous and other deceptive writings into the stream of real social media posts, as if they were the genuine opinions of ordinary people. Many academics, and most journalists and activists, claim that these so-called “50c party” posts vociferously argue for the government’s side in political and policy debates. As we show, this is also true of the vast majority of posts openly accused on social media of being 50c. Yet, almost no systematic empirical evidence exists for this claim, or, more importantly, for the Chinese regime’s strategic objective in pursuing this activity. In the first large scale empirical analysis of this operation, we show how to identify the secretive authors of these posts, the posts written by them, and their content. We estimate that the government fabricates and posts about 448 million social media comments a year. In contrast to prior claims, we show that the Chinese regime’s strategy is to avoid arguing with skeptics of the party and the government, and to not even discuss controversial issues. We infer that the goal of this massive secretive operation is instead to regularly distract the public and change the subject, as most of the these posts involve cheerleading for China, the revolutionary history of the Communist Party, or other symbols of the regime. We discuss how these results fit with what is known about the Chinese censorship program, and suggest how they may change our broader theoretical understanding of “common knowledge” and information control in authoritarian regimes.

HeartMob is a service designed to connect targets of harassment with thousands of well-intentioned users ready to leap into action as a force to stand up to Twitter eggs. The site lets anyone sign up to send positive messages to people being trolled; volunteers can also help document and report abuse so that victims don’t have to keep telling their painful stories.

People want to help, but they don’t know what to do, says Lalonde. “HeartMob creates a space that validates victims’ experience, and it gives people practical tools.”

Urgent action needed to combat online violence against women & girls, says new UN report
    ▻http://www.broadbandcommission.org/publications/Pages/bb-and-gender-2015.aspx
    http://www.broadbandcommission.org/PublishingImages/BB%20Report%20and%20Documents/150%20X%20200/WG-Gender2015-report-cover.jpg

Key findings of the report include:

    – An estimated 73 percent of women have already been exposed to, or have experienced, some form of online violence.
    – Women in the age range of 18 to 24 are uniquely likely to experience stalking and sexual harassment in addition to physical threats.
    – Nine million women in the European Union’s 28 countries alone have experienced online violence as young as 15 years old.
    – One in five female Internet users live in countries where harassment and abuse of women online is extremely unlikely to be punished.
    – In many countries women are reluctant to report their victimization for fear of social repercussions.
    – Cyber VAWG puts a premium on emotional bandwidth, personal and workplace time, financial resources and missed wages.

    (...)

The report presents a set of Key Recommendations, proposing a global framework based around three ‘S’s – Sensitization, Safeguards and Sanctions.

    – Sensitization – Preventing cyber VAWG through training, learning, campaigning and community development to promote changes in in social attitudes and behavior.
    – Safeguards – Implementing oversight and maintaining a responsible internet infrastructure through technical solutions and more informed customer care practices
    – Sanctions – Develop and uphold laws, regulations and governance mechanisms to deter perpetrators from committing these acts.
